I’m David Porter – an obsessive language learner who loves learning, teaching, reading, speaking any language at all.

And what makes you think you’re so smart?

Nothing in particular. I grew up in Florida speaking only English. I was exposed to Spanish in Middle School, but those classes were predictably awful. Still, I should be grateful, not critical; that’s where I first realized that I love language.

At age 16 I started learning American Sign Language and became a licensed interpreter in 2006 at age 18.

That same year – 2006 – I moved to the Dominican Republic and started learning Spanish by total immersion. Since then I’ve become fluent (still working on a native accent…) and have discovered not just my love of learning languages but also of teaching them. I’ve taught English, Spanish, and American Sign Language in schools, one-on-one, and in volunteer programs for the past 9 years.

So you’re some know it all trilingual, huh?

Not quite. I am trilingual, but I’m still desperately searching for fresh opportunities to learn new languages, whether it’s

• Picking up enough Haitian Creole to converse clumsily with Haitian immigrants in Dominican Republic
• Forcing my Italian and Japanese friends to teach me at least the basics of their native languages
• Checking out videos of sign languages from around the world.

And the point of all this?

There are lots of resources available to native English speakers who want to learn Spanish, but so few feel anything like the natural immersion process that I experienced. I want my experiences, my successes, and even my failures in the world of language to help you hablar bien.
