Education

Sunflower House looks forward to the opportunity to educate members of our community about child abuse and how to prevent it. We provide the following trainings to area educators, parents, professionals and companies.

Child Abuse and Neglect (MRT-Mandated Reporter Training)

or

In this session you will learn to recognize signs of child abuse & neglect, and you will learn the correct procedures/laws for reporting. Topics include: How to recognize possible victims, How to report a suspicion of abuse, and How to appropriately handle a child’s disclosure of abuse.This training now includes Abusive Head Trauma prevention education. This training is approved for 2.5 clock hours, KDH&E. (available in English & Spanish)

Stewards of Children

 or 

A child sexual abuse prevention training that educates adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, and motivates them to take courageous action. Key concepts addressed include: adult responsibility, choice, relentless compassion, consciousness and personal power.  This program is appropriate for youth-serving and faith-based organizations.  This training is approved for 2 clock hours, KDH&E. (available in English & Spanish)

Keeping Kids Safe Online

Learn more about possible dangers of internet usage, practical safety tips & tools and the cyber crime reporting process.  Presentation covers electronic safety concepts, including gaming systems, music devices and other wireless/internet communication.  *Presentation designed by Sunflower House, Overland Park Police Department and FBI Cyber Crime Task Force.  This program is appropriate for adults only.  This training is approved for 2 clock hours, KDH&E.  Alternate presentations can be arranged if desired, please contact the Education Director at 913-631-5800 or  for more information. Abusive Head Trauma (Shaken Baby Syndrome) Prevention Presentation

Appropriate for teens parents, potential parents, or any person who may provide care for young children.  The who, what, when, why and how (to prevent) of this act of violence against children are discussed through group activities, discussion and scenarios. This presentation can be requested at your location for 1 or 2 approved clock hours, please contact the Education Director for more information, call  or email .

P.S. It’s My Body! Curriculum

An innovative curriculum of developmentally appropriate activities to teach the three R’s: recognize, resist and report.  Curriculum includes lessons on personal safety, self-esteem, bullying, sexual harassment, communication skills and parent-child activities. P.S. Happy Bear

A delightful, interactive play for children ages 4-7.  Implemented in more than 200 elementary schools and preschools in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties, this 25-minute program addresses recognizing welcome and unwelcome touches, practicing resistance skills, and learning to report to a trusted adult. Staff In-Service Training

Child Abuse and Neglect Training at your location to assist school personnel and other mandated reporters in recognizing signs of child abuse & neglect, and knowing the correct procedures for reporting. This presentation can be requested at your location, please contact the Education Director for more information, call  or email .

S.T.O.P Abuse for Teens

An interactive presentation for adolescents.  Addressed during this presentation are types of abuse, including definitions and examples, positive discipline methods, along with specific & practical prevention techniques.  This presentation is recommended for Child Development Classes.

Parent Education

Presentation for parents on safety tips, child protection, effective methods to talk with children about personal safety. Parents hear the information and take it home to share. (available in English & Spanish)
