Have you guys noticed more dragons on your Netflix? Us too. And soon there’s going to be more drug cartels, Reading Rainbows and smart girls.
I’m writing this as a member of Netflix’s and even if I wasn’t, I’d still be a fan of its original series. They’re better than most of what’s on TV and don’t take the time commitment of a movie. (Unless you binge-watch, which admit it, always ends up happening despite your best efforts.)
DreamWorks Animation expanded its How To Train Your Dragon franchise with 13 episodes of Dragons: Race To The Edge and my kids have already devoured the season and are thirsty for more.
I want to tell them to suck it up. If I have to learn patience by hoping for another season of Sense8, they do the same for Race to The Edge.
Coming up in August is Narcos, a true story about an officer’s attempt to take down Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, and Club de Cuervos, the streaming service’s first Spanish-language series. It’s about the heirs of a prominent family fighting over who will control the professional soccer team. (FYI, Netflix offers subtitles in many languages.)
I’m interested to watch how well Project MC2 is received when it comes out on August 7. It’s about four smart girls who love science and are recruited to join a spy organization. Not to be a prude, but when tweens are bombarded with messages that reiterate how their self-worth is tied to their looks, it’s nice to see a show aimed at showcasing girls’ brains. Netflix says it’s trying to show that smart is the new cool by incorporating the trendy education buzzword: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math.)
Speaking of education, your favorite rainbow is back. It’s Reading Rainbow, a PBS show that first aired in 1983 and stayed on TV for about 25 years. Netfilx will begin streaming it on Aug. 1. I don’t know about you, but whenever I think of Reading Rainbow, I hear that theme song.
Another bit of nostalgia streaming next month is the second season of Inspector Gadget. My 7-year-old and I watched the first season together, and he was floored when he found out I already knew all about the show. Though it’s not the original, this CGI sequel is still very entertaining. Season 2 starts Aug. 23.
I’d tell you guys more about what’s coming up next month, but all of this Netflix talk is making me jones for catching up on Orange is the New Black. I’m on episode four and need to catch up. What have you been streaming lately?
