Program:

The Educating Leaders for the Future (ELF) Program is managed by the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) and the Sustainability Internship Program of the Department of Geography. The program aims to:

  • —Increase Access to Higher Education;
  • —Encourage at risk youth to pursue green academic and career pathways;
  • —Diversify the environmental movement and field of study;
  • —Provide youth most affected by environmental issues with a context for understanding those issues; and
  • —Integrate sustainability into curriculum.

Santa Barbara Housing Authority

Twice a week, we partner with the Santa Barbara Housing Authority to grow a community garden and expose the students to science and sustainability through the garden. Our lessons are inter-generational in nature bringing together students from 2nd grade to 7th grade to learn together and collaborate.

Supervision: The UCSB Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP)

Position: Youth Educator

Hours: 8-10hrs/wk

Pay:

This is an unpaid position and students will be required to travel by bus or personal vehicle to the school site. Mileage and gas will not be reimbursed.

Responsibilities:

The Youth Educator will primarily be responsible for facilitating in classroom and service activities with the youth. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Direct work with youth and their families at the garden Teach pre-developed course modules Support the community garden
  • Curriculum development Creating new course modules and interactive activities Developing new service opportunities
  • Coordination Attend weekly meetings Assist program coordinator on occasional events and outreach activities

Eligibility:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Students of any class standing may apply
  • Ability to speak publically, especially to a youth audience
  • Basic college level writing skills
  • Basic familiarity with the concept of Sustainability
  • Basic familiarity with gardening practices
  • Comfortable working with at-risk youth
  • Ability to engage with youth from 2nd-12th grade
  • Available to work 8-10 hours a week throughout the term of the internship and is comfortable working during at least 50% of hours during midterms.
  • Ability to commute to local school sites by bus or personal vehicle.
  • In the last stage of applicant review, the applicant must complete and pass fingerprinting, a background check, complete a tuberculosis test, and any other requirements of our high school and youth organization partners. The EAOP program will pay for the costs of the necessary tests/checks. Only applicants that we are serious about offering a position to will need to complete these tests/checks.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Advanced writing skills
  • Advanced professional communication skills
  • Experience doing some form of college recruitment or readiness program (AVID, MESA, EAOP, etc)
  • Experience working with youth, especially at risk youth.
  • Knowledge of sustainable practices and gardening techniques.
  • Experience implementing sustainability practices
  • Familiarity/Fluency in Spanish
