Learn Spanish Dunedin

We’ve added two special topic (ST) courses to our summer 2015 schedule.  We see it as an exciting step in expanding our support for dual language education.  The courses will be taught bilingually in English and Spanish with opportunities to further develop your oral and written proficiency in Spanish.  Nonetheless, the courses can be completed successfully at any and all levels of Spanish language proficiency.   Spanish in the Community Lecture Course:  This course will have limited online coursework during session 4, July 20 – August 14.  It will meet face-to-face on the Corvallis campus July 27 – 31, 9:00 AM – 3:20 PM in Furman 105. Instructor:  Elena Chavarría Correa TCE 599 ST/Spanish in the Community = CRN74285 (cross-listed as TCE 499 for undergraduates = CRN 74313) 3 Credits This experiential-learning course exposes you to the cultural, social, linguistic, and political issues that are relevant to Latin@ communities in Oregon.  It is designed to immerse you in the richnessandcomplexity of Latin@ experiences.  You will interact with Latin@parents and other guest speakers.  Active participation in both the community and the classroom are key components of the course.    Biliteracy in the Schools Hybrid Course:  The class has substantial online coursework during session 4, July 20 – August 14. It will also meet face-to-face on the Corvallis campus August 6 and 7, 9:00 AM – 4:50 PM in Furman 105. Instructor:  Kinsey Martin TCE 599 ST/Biliteracy in the Schools = CRN74286 (cross-listed as TCE 499 for undergraduates = CRN 74314) 3 Credits This Spanish/English bilingual course asks you to explore equity and bias in classroom language practices.   You will learn to leverage social and academic linguistic competencies to enhance literacy development.  You will use your own bilingual skills to learn about biliteracy considerations such as the role of oral language and interaction, authentic instructional approaches, cross-linguistic transfer, the organization ofinstructional units within and between languages, assessment methods, and data-driven interventions.  Throughout these topics, you will reflect on issues of equity, diversity, and the dominant ideologies that impact the teaching and learning of languages in K-12 education.    Faculty Elena Chavarría Correa: Elena is a family and community liaison for Corvallis School District. She has worked in community outreach and education for many years, with a focus on science, art, and the facilitation of cross-cultural teaching and learning.
