English Courses and Seminars for Health Care Professionals The University of Delaware ELI, a top provider of English language training for students and professionals, has teamed up with the University of Delaware College of Health Sciences and the UD Department of Theatre to offer this innovative new program for medical professionals. Location near world-renowned hospitals The Delaware Valley and Mid-Atlantic region boasts a wealth of medical innovation and treatmentopportunities in all fields of medicine. In fact, many of the worlds’ most renowned hospitals and treatment centers are within one to two hours’ drive from the University of Delaware.  These include Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Memorial Sloan Cancer Center in New York City, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The University of Delaware is located in Newark, Delaware — a beautiful, quiet town located only 2 hours from New York City and Washington DC, and 45 minutes from Philadelphia.  Innovative medical research and training The University of Delaware’s College of Health Sciences (CHS) is partnered with many renowned institutions advancing research and applications in biotechnology, physical therapy, pediatrics, cardiology and radiology to name a few. Participants will gain new insights into practices and research US colleagues are engaged in in the respective fields. CHS has pioneered a training approach called Health Care Theatre which has been used with medical andnursing students as well as medical professionals. Health Care Theatre allows trainees to practice their skills with trained acting students to simulate real-life experience in patient doctor interactions. Participants receive feedback from health care and communication specialists on interpersonal interactions, communication and therapeutic touch. The Medical English program incorporates this approach and add a linguistic component to the feedback session.   Overview of Courses and Activities The Medical English Program courses provide an interactive learning environment with problem-solving activities and role playing. Develop Medical English vocabulary and communication skills The in-class component focuses on: The mastery of specific medical vocabulary and idioms Improvement in the ability to communicate in English in a hospital or clinical setting with patients and colleagues Make professional presentations Participants will also practice making professional presentations,  suchas those required at international conferences, followed by discussions and question/answer sessions with their peers. Presentations will be videotaped for subsequent self-analysis and instructor feedback. Understand medical journals Authentic readings medical journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) will be used to discuss advances in research depending on participants’ field of interest. Study with a private tutor In addition, participants will work one-on-one with a trained tutor to address specific individual needs and further deepen their communication skills in their professional field. Experience American Culture The four-week program includes escorted excursions to Washington, DC and Philadelphia and New York City–all within a one to two hours’ drive. Participants may opt to organize additional tours to nearby Baltimore, the outlets in Lancaster and Rehoboth beach or Atlantic City. ELI staffwill assist participants with making arrangements. Housing and Meals Participants can be housed in one of the following facilities (depending on availability): Housing Option Description Price An “inn” style of housing just next to the central UD campus with many housing formats and prices. Price range: $520 – $940 Live with an American family. Participants will have a private bedroom. Several plans include meals. Price range: $640 – $1,044 Live in this hotel that is conveniently located across the street from the UD campus. Reservations include Wi-Fi internet access and breakfast, and rooms typically contain full-sized or queen-sized beds. Approximately $1,350 ($50 per night) Meals: Participants who choose to live in a housing option that does not include meals should budget approximately US$ 400 for food (three meals per day for 4 weeks). In order to be successful in this program, the participant must have at least a “high-intermediate level” of English (theequivalent to a Level IV in the ELI’s ).
