10 Reasons to Learn a Foreign Language

You are probably already studying a foreign language (and for those of you at this would be English), but if not then you may be seriously considering learning a foreign language to better enrich your life. Whether you are a current student or student-to-be, here are ten reasons why it is beneficial to learn a foreign language.

 1. To increase global understanding

“A different language is a different vision of life.” – Federico Fellini, Italian film director

 2. To improve employment potential

in a foreign language and enriches whether you chose to work abroad or in your native country.

 3. To increase native language ability

“Those who know nothing of foreign languages, knows nothing of their own.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

 4. To sharpen cognitive and life skills

“We have strong evidence today that studying a foreign language has a ripple effect, helping to improve student performance in other subjects.” – Richard Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education under Bill Clinton

 5. Creating a brighter future for you and your loved ones

When traveling abroad often or not  we have to speak a foreign language in order to get around. Sometimes however two different people from two different countries find a neutral language to express themselves. .

 8. To expand study, live and work abroad options

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” – Robert Frost, American poet.

9. To increase understanding of oneself and ones’ own culture

“As the traveler who has once been from home is wiser than he who has never left his own doorstep, so a knowledge of one other culture should sharpen our ability to scrutinize more steadily, to appreciate more lovingly, our own.” – Margaret Mead, American anthropologist

10. To make lifelong friends

“The most important trip you may take in life is meeting people halfway.” – Henry Boye, author

Finally, while we are focusing on the reasons why one should study a foreign language, we must also not neglect our own language and its history. So, why study your own language and its history? We believe this quote sums it up wonderfully.

“To be able to develop the insight of an artist, and the analytical precision of a scientist, and the persuasiveness of a lawyer.” - Prof. Maureen Moran, Brunel University
