SPANISH BILINGUAL PROGRAM The Spanish Bilingual Program will begin for the 2012-2013 school year
The Spanish Bilingual Program offers the opportunity to acquire the basic skills for speaking, reading, writing, listening and communicating in both English and Spanish at a young age. Spanish and English are used as the languages of instruction, beginning in Kindergarten or Grade 1 and continuing to Grade 12. The program is part of theInternationalSpanishAcademynetwork sponsored by the Ministry of Education ofSpain. At Dr. E.P. Scarlett, the Spanish bilingual program will establish an environment in which both English and Spanish are used and constantly needed for purposes of communication, personal satisfaction and learning. Students will have numerous opportunities to learn and use the language in meaningful, purposeful ways to meet their needs, interests and abilities. In bilingual programming, the delivery of subject area content, language instruction and cultural information often occurs concurrently, promoting effective language acquisition. Students who enroll in the SpanishBilingual program are expected to make the commitment to remain in the program for their three years in high school. In order to earn the Spanish Bilingual Certificate, students need 25 credits in the following courses: Spanish Language Arts 10, 20 and 30, Food Studies 10 (in Spanish) and Grade 11 option to be confirmed.
