In 2005, we opened our doors as a modular school on the old Dubois School campus in Wake Forest, NC. Two years later (2007) we moved to our new home. Since then we have settled in our permanent brick and mortar building. Our school mascot, “Sly” Fox, was voted for and named by our first group of students. They also selected the school colors of forest green and gold. You can see our Fox Pride throughout the building, as well as in the character of our students.
Forest Pines Drive Elementary is a participant of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). PBIS is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior. Classes receive Sly compliment cards when they are observed following behavioral expectations, or being “SLY”. We chose to use the letters of our mascot’s name as a reminder of expectations. Each letter stands for a behavioral phrase. S = Show Respect; L= Listen and Learn; Y = Your safety counts. Classes are rewarded for receiving a certain number (e.g. 75, 125, and 200) of compliment cards. Various prize levels are awarded and announced daily according to the number of compliment cards received.
The Forest Pines Drive Faculty believes strongly and works effectively in Professional Learning Teams (PLTs). Imagine teachers of varying backgrounds and experience levels working together to improve the way children learn. We see this as collaborative time with the purpose of reviewing student performance for improvements. We have found our teams to be very beneficial for our students’, as well as our teachers’ learning and growth. These PLTs also provide a platform for professional development as needed to identify best practices related to teaching and learning. Teachers at Forest Pines are life-long learners. Our teachers focus on meeting the needs of individual students, using data to drive instruction, and sharing successful strategies. When teachers learn — students learn. There is no greater gain!
