Learn Spanish Limerick

Jason Steve Sarkozi-Forfinski

About Academic Me Ever since I finished high school I’ve been on the move; I’m a bit of a nomad at heart. Throughout the years of searching for what I want to be when I grow up (still not there yet), I find myself happily in yet another new place: Corvallis, Oregon. However, this website isn’t centered around my movement but on the movement of others.  I’m an anthropology student at Oregon State University working to broadly understand human movement. Particularly, I’m curious to learn about how migrants negotiate their future vis-à-vis pressures to assimilate or at least integrate into the host society. In the case of Vigo (Galicia), Spain, migrants’ “foreigness” is judged on how well they integrate into society often through their ability to speak Spanish and Galician (galego), the two co-official languages in that autonomous region. Thus, given this context my tentative dissertation project centers around the following research questions: 1) How do migrants think and feel about (andcope with) learning Galician and Spanish, especially if they come from a non Spanish-speaking background? 2) How is this entangled with their perceptions of the future vis-à-vis the call for integration/assimilation? 3) If migrants aren’t learning Galician (the minoritized, thus less commodified language of the two), why aren’t they? Coming from an applied program, I’m also interested in working with migrants on different digital storytelling projects to give them a voice in their local host community. As my project evolves so will this page. Stay tuned for updates.
