After 20 years in Mérida the popular whole sale store Costco re-opeoned this week, relocating north to the former Cordemex factory property between Plaza Galerias and Gran Mundo Maya Museum. It was previously on Calle 60 north, near the Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida.
During construction a was discovered in the car parking area and instead of filling it in the developers decided to make a feature of it. It is now a prominent attraction with terracing, clever landscaping and beautiful lighting. The new shopping area, which sells groceries and household goods, is 4,908 square meters larger than before. The parking lot has grown from 180 to 600 spaces. The ceremonial opening was attended by the Mayor Renan Barrera Concha, and Secretary of Economic Development, David Alpizar Carrillo, who took a tour of the store along with Jaime González Solano, director of Costco Mexico and branch manager Ariel Rangel Muciño. Based in Washington, Costco is a membership-only store founded in San Diego, Calif., 38 years ago and was originally called Price Club. There are 671 branches across the United States, Mexico, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Spain. As of 2014, it is the second-largest retailer in the U.S. and the third largest inthe world. Membership for the Merida Costco is 450 pesos a year for a “Gold Star” membership, or $1,000 pesos a year for an “Executive” cash-back membership.
