STAFF MEMBER: BIO: Sylvia Doud School Psychologist Sylvia Doud is joining us from San Diego and is excited to be making the move to Colorado so that she can once again experience seasons. She received her undergraduate degree from Montana State University in Bozeman, and her graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Originally from Germany, Sylvia enjoys traveling (usually just to visit family), running (slowly), and spending time with her two girls (ages 4 and 1), husband, and dogs. Sylvia enjoys working with diverse children and families and providing academic and social-emotional support. She is excited to join the team at Steck and looks forward to meeting you all! Natalie Keane 1st Grade Teacher I have been at Swigert International School for the past three years, teaching kindergarten and 2nd grade. Before Swigert, I student taught with Andrew Menard and Jan Winget and was a paraprofessional at Steck. I am so excited to be a part of such an incredible communityhere at Steck again! Kerrie McCormick 5th Grade Literacy Hi!  My name is Kerrie McCormick and I will be teaching fifth grade literacy next year.  I have six years of teaching experience in fifth and sixth grade.  I am originally from NJ and moved out to Denver six years ago with my sister and friends.  I love to read, swim, or spend time with my golden retriever, Madeline.  I am very passionate about travel and photography.  This summer I am extremely excited to study abroad in Mallorca, Spain, where I will be working toward my master’s degree in ESL.  I am really excited to be a part of the Steck team! Laura Miller 4th Grade SS/Sci & 5th Grade Math My name is Laura Tiehen and I am from Kansas City, Missouri. I have my B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Missouri. I have taught 4th grade for the past three years in the Blue Springs School District and I look forward to joining the 4th/5th grade teaching team atSteck. I enjoy traveling, running, camping, and spending time with my friends and family. This summer I will be moving to Denver, getting married, and becoming Mrs. Miller.  I am excited to move closer to the mountains and meet everyone in the Steck Community. Anda Seale ESL Teacher My name is Anda Hoadley Seale. I am a Denver Native and a former student of the Denver Public Schools. I grew up in the Park Hill neighborhood and attended Park Hill Elementary School, Smiley Middle School, and graduated from Manual High School. Moreover, I graduated from Colorado State University in 1994 with a degree in Spanish. Later, I received a Masters Degree in Bilingual Special Education in 2000. In 1995 I landed a job teaching Spanish in an after school program at Gilpin Elementary School and I have been teaching in DPS ever since, for more than eighteen years! The DPS schools I taught at are: Harrington, Dora Moore, Steele, Beachcourt, Stedman, Westerly Creek, William Roberts, and SwigertInternational School (IB). I currently live in the Stapleton neighborhood with my husband, and two sons. They both attend DSST High School in Stapleton. I have two dogs and a cat. I love to do yoga, travel, ride horses, run, and ski. My philosophy about teaching is that all children can learn. Children add life to my life. I value diversity and enjoy learning about other cultures and languages. My goal is for children to enjoy school and be challenged to become independent and curious learners. I love to teach children! Warner Varno Art Teacher My name is Warner K. Varno.  I have served as the visual arts instructor for Academia Ana Marie Sandoval in NW Denver, ECE-6th grade for going on six years and I am excited to join the Steck Elementary Community for the first time this year, teaching on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings!  I have worked for the last fifteen years as a Master Teaching Artist, largely in Colorado for Denver Public Schools but uniquely for bilingual and duallanguage public Montessori schools, with two assignments in traditional public schools; Denver’s East High School and Nicoloff Elementary, a K-8 school in San Ysidro, CA.  I created Time for Art, my fine art enrichment programs for before and after school classes, summer camps and portfolio preparation largely for schools that had limited or PT art programs.  Currently, I exhibit my own artwork at Zip 37 Gallery and have maintained my drawing and painting studio in South Central Denver since 2002.  I was raised in Central New York, attended undergraduate school at SUNY Potsdam and received my K-12 art teaching license and MA in K-12 Curriculum and Instruction for the Visual Arts from The University of Denver. Kat Zimmerman Gifted & Talented Teacher My name is Kat Zimmerman and I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA.  For almost 20 years I’ve been enjoying skiing, hiking, camping and listening to music in the amazing mountains under the beautiful blue skies in Colorado.  I truly love living here!For the past 16 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of the educational community in Denver.  My experiences with GT students started in 2002 when I fatefully discovered Dr. Howard and the Polaris Program.  I love the inquisitive nature of GT students and have continued to challenge myself to learn more and more about working with advanced thinkers over time. Writing and science are amazing parts of our world that I have a personal passion for and love sharing! During 2005 I expanded my writing experiences by publishing a children’s book called Oscar’s First Flight. In the future, I’m hoping to find some time to learn how to play guitar and/or to speak Spanish and travel with my family. I’m also a mom with a four-year old son, 2 dogs, and a cat in our household.    My husband and I have a custom framing shop as well so I spend time there too! I’m looking forward to getting to know the Steck Community! Melissa Jackson Para Educator I graduated from ASU in 2008 with my bachelor’sdegree in Elementary Education. I then worked as the permanent substitute at Madison #1. My husband, daughter and I then moved to Texas for two years where I worked in the Special Education Department. I then had my son in September of 2010 and two weeks later we moved back to Arizona. I stayed at home that years with both little ones, and the following year I decided to get back to work. I began working at MTA in 2011 teaching third grade where I have spent the last three years. We had a lot of fun and the students and I all learned so much. Last year I had the opportunity to work with the sixth grade students  teaching Language Arts and Social Studies. At the end of last school year my husband took a new exciting job that led us to Denver where we now call home. My son will now be in kindergarten (where does the time go), and my sassy sidekick daughter will be in 1st grade. We are all looking forward to a new ad exciting start here at Steck. Allistair Kuhls Para Educator  My name isAlli Kuhls and I am currently finishing up my degree at Regis university. My degree background will be in  education, special education with an endorsement in ESL, English and Physical Education. I have been working with children of all ages since I was 15 years old, teaching swim lessons, coaching and even in classrooms around the Denver area. I am very excited to begin my journey at Steck!!  Yune Pak Para Educator  Greetings! My name is Yune, and I am so excited to be at Steck. I spent the last three years teaching kindergarten at an English-language school in Seoul, and I’m excited to continue to work with young students this year. I’ve been loving everything about Denver, but especially the gorgeous parks and the yoga studios (did you know that hot yoga was a thing?).
