This is our seminar series and it’s designed for you to become a more productive fisherman in less time. We are all so busy with our careers and family lives, so why not ease the learning curve by attending one or more of our 6 Seminars offered from October through March. Some of you who have been with me on instructional outings will have the opportunity to learn about specific topics that interest you, and newcomers will have the opportunity to learn more about our fishing here on the Inner Banks.

December Seminar: Knots and Rigging

This workshop will be a little different from most of the others.  We are going to cover all the knots and rigging techiques you’ll need to know to fish our area.  This will include light tackle and rigging for bigger fish such as tarpon and giant red drum (including the popping cork rig).  We will actually tie knots together and setup rods the proper way using real line and leaders.  I’ll also teach you how to properly crimp monofilament and by making some of your own Owen Lupton drum rigs.  We’ll also make some live bait rigs and discuss in depth the often nebulous issue of color choices in artificial bait fishing.  This seminar is all about what’s on the end of the line so you’ll have complete confidence in landing any fish.

January Seminar:  Flounder Fishing

In this workshop, you will learn how to target flounder the Pamlico Estuary during the summer and early fall, when the flounder are most abundant.  We will cover how to locate schools of flounder, how to locate larger flounder, live bait tactics, artificial bait tactics, and much more.

February Seminar: Red Drum Fishing (Giants and Pups) In this workshop, you will learn how to target redfish in our estuary throughout the year.  This includes the giant red drum or “old drum” caught in the Pamlico Sound during the spawning run in the late summer and early fall.  I’ll discuss the tradition method of baitfishing and as as the new popping cork method and catching them on topwater baits.  We’ll also talk about catching the smaller drum on light tackle.  The Pamlico/Pungo estuary has resident puppy drum all year.  Learn how to find them by locating their preferred habitat and what baits to use in particular situations.  This is a diverse fishery throughout the year and being versatile and knowing various tactics will enable you to catch them every month out of the year.

March Seminar: Spring and Summer Pamlico Light Tackle Fishing

In this workshop, you will learn how to target fish in the Pamlico Estuary in the spring and dog days of summer.  You’ll get a better understanding of the differences between the spring and summer fishing, the transition between the two seasons, tactics for each time period, and an understanding of how to target and catch other species besides speckled trout, puppy drum, flounder, and striped bass.  The Pamlico Sound is host to an abundant variety of other fun fish to catch including spadefish, sheepshead, grey trout, tautogs, bluefish, spanish mackerel, black drum, croaker, spot, white perch, and more.  Learn how to find all of these by locating their preferred habitat and what baits to use in particular situations.  This is a diverse fishery throughout the year and being versatile and knowing various tactics will enable you to consistently produce fish in a variety of conditions in the spring and summer.
