Position Summary:

The National Domestic Workers Alliance () organizes domestic workers in the United States for respect, recognition and fair labor standards. We work to elevate domestic workers as key leaders in building a powerful and dynamic social justice movement by winning labor protections and regulatory changes at the state, national, and global level. The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents 53 affiliates in 37 cities and 18 states nationally.

NDWA seeks a creative, energetic and experienced professional who can effectively execute our worker-led enforcement program in New York City. This program was first designed and piloted in 2015 when it became clear to NDWA and its NY affiliates that the current enforcement process of the NY Domestic Worker Bill of Rights was not effective as it should be. Since the passage of the historic bill, enforcement has been happening at a small scale and in a dispersed manner, and significant barriers related to immigration & fear of retaliation still prevent workers from coming forward. The Enforcement Program Coordinator will play a major role in helping our movements understand how to undertake & evaluate local enforcement strategies post “Bill of Rights” campaign victories.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Onboarding worker advocates

○ Design & conduct the selection process for each cohort of worker advocates

○ Complete curriculum on systematic outreach, education, and enforcement of domestic worker’s labor protections; train & prepare the selected worker advocates for the program

  • Outreach

○ Design each cycle’s outreach strategy and follow-up processes, supervise worker advocates when they are in the field & cultivating new worker contacts

○ Organize community town halls for domestic workers to collectively learn their rights, improve negotiation skills, and determine fair neighborhood standards

  • Education

○ Keep domestic workers rights education materials up-to-date and accessible to workers

○ Provide information and conduct further research on questions that New York domestic workers and advocates may have; provide and/or help local domestic worker organizations plan domestic worker rights education

  • Legal clinic

○ Act as the main liaison to legal services partners & agencies who are providing their assistance to our domestic worker rights legal clinic

○ Train and supervise worker advocates on worker intake and case management in the legal clinic

○ Review worker cases brought forth through the program on a regular basis, track their progress towards resolution, and if necessary strategize escalation with worker advocates and lawyer if needed

○ Identify & report some of the most compelling cases that could serve organizing efforts to the New York organizer

  • Evaluation & reporting

○ Work with the New York organizer to evaluate the program to make improvements with each new cohort and cycle

○ Prepare a report on the program’s final outcomes to program funders

Required Qualifications:

  • Alignment with NDWA’s vision and values as part of a broader social justice movement dedicated to racial, economic, and gender justice.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in worker rights and/or immigrant rights advocacy with demonstrated skills in case management
  • Enthusiastic about developing domestic worker leadership as a cornerstone of the enforcement program, and demonstrated ability to effectively engage low-wage workers and/or immigrant community members in with respect and integrity
  • Must be able to travel around New York City to support worker advocates’ outreach sessions and facilitate community education
  • Experience cultivating relationships, and coordinating between different stakeholders on a project or campaign, ensuring systems for effective communication and decision making
  • Ability to work independently, in partnership with New York organizing staff, affiliates, and key partners to continue to develop & sharpen our enforcement strategy
  • Spanish/English bilingual preferred but not required\
