In the previous lesson we covered. As you most likely noticed, they are written very much like in English, although there are still a few differences which we will discuss in this lesson. Besides, we will learn how to use the vocabulary for countries in Spanish in simple descriptions and conversations. Let’s start…
Introductory video: Countries and nationalities in Spanish
We will begin this lesson with a video about countries and nationalities – paises y nacionalidades. It begins by showing a list of 20 Spanish speaking countries – paises donde se habla español. It also shows 6 countries where people like to learn Spanish based on our stats and teaches the basic way to make questions and sentences about where people are from in the language. Finally, we show two examples of very simple conversations using the vocabulary in the video. Make sure to stick until the end of the video as it will certainly help you in the rest of the lesson.

Talking about countries and nationalities in Spanish.
First we will review a few important things. To ask where someone is from we use ¿De dónde ? as in ¿De dónde eres?. To answer we also need SER as in “Soy de Argentina”. You may also answer with the nationality as in “Soy argentino”. Some important verbs we often use with this topic are NACER (to be born), VIVIR (live), HABLAR (speak) and CRECER (grow up). You can find a lot of examples in the previous lesson.
The first paragraph talks about someone from Nicaragua. We have included some key phrases here like “Nací en…” (I was born in), “Hablamos language” (We speak…) and other important verbs such as “Comunicar”(to communicate) and “Entender”(to understand). Press PLAY to listen to the example.

Spain, France, England and Germany are very beautiful countries. I would visit Asia to go to China and Japan, although I can not speak neither Japanese nor Chinese.
The last paragraph uses to indicate the location of a country and some more verbs in the past like “Crecí…” and “Me mudé” (I moved…). Again you will see the phrase “Puedo hablar…” (I can speak…). You can use the words “Idioma” and “Lenguaje” for language.

I can speak several languages including Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, English and German. My favorite language is Spanish.

In this case we are talking about just one person, Ana, but if we were talking about several people, then their nationalities would have aplural form, for example: “Ana y Juan son nicaragüenses” (adding a “s” at the end of the nationality). Question 2 Explanation: In the conversation she says “El canal de panamá es muy importante para el mundo” so the first choice is the correct answer. Be careful to use the right conjugation of the verbs, in this case “pensar” (to think). As you can see, we don’t ask “¿Qué pensar Ana...?” but “¿Qué piensa Ana...?” because “piensa” is the form we use for the pronouns “El” and “Ella”. Question 3 ¿Dónde vive la familia de Ana? -> Where does Ana's family live? A En España B En Estados Unidos C En Brasil. D En Rusia E En Australia Question 3 Explanation: In the conversation she says “Mi familia vive aquí en los Estados Unidos” so they live in the US. Again, it’s very important to use the right form of the verb “vivir” (to live) for the subjectwe are talking about. Here are some more examples: ¿Dónde vives tú? (Where do you live?), “¿Dónde vive ella? (Where does she live?)” and ¿Dónde viven ustedes? (Where do they live?) Question 4 ¿En qué país nació Alex? -> Where was Alex born? A Alex nació en Panamá B , Alex nació en Colombia C Alex nació en Estados Unidos. Question 4 Explanation: “El dice que” (He says that) “Él nacío en Panamá pero crecío en los Estados Unidos”. In this case, the verbs “crecer” and “nacer” will change a little and will be used in the past tense in Spanish. Here are some more examples: “Yo nací en Canadá” (I was born in Canada), “Yo crecí en Inglaterra” (I grew up in England), “Carmen y ella nacieron y crecieron en Estados Unidos” (She and Carmen were born and grew up in the US) Question 5 Which of these is true about Ana?
