Solar Power Project - A Hands On Workshop Are you interested in Solar Energy? Would you like to learn how to install Solar Panels and at the same time do something great for a small rural community in Costa Rica? Then the ‘Solar Panel’ Workshop is great for you.
Age requirement: 18+ years  Working Schedule: 2 week course, with some days off for activities Language requirement: It would be great if you speak some basic Spanish – but staff on the project also speak and understand English Costs: The two weeks on the ‘Solar Panel’ Workshop are 1200 USD. Accommodation: Host family Food: 3 meals daily Location: Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica 24/7 emergency telephone support Optional: A letter of recommendation and certificate at the end of your workshop.     The goal of the Solar Power Workshop is to provide renewable electric power in rural communities in Osa Peninsula, where it would otherwise be absent. This reduces overall carbon emissions by offering solar as a viable alternative to running a generator or burning tires, or simply having to pay high electrical bills (especially for public buildings who are non-profit this is a very important financial factor). The workshop aims at installing solar systems free of charge for chosen places/houses/ farms in small remote communities with no access to grid-electricity. You as a participant in our Solar Power Project will gain an understanding of the basic engineering principles of photovoltaic power and solar panels. You will receive theory and practical lessons on how solar panels work. We will make panels from scratch and install basic systems. We will also install solar systems on houses. An important aspect of the project is that we involve the local community in the workshop and provide knowledge and expertise to locals on solar power systems. The locals are the ones managing and running the systems later on, so they’ll have to know how they work. You will help to educate the community about renewable energies and solar systems. We are planning educational events to educate kids and adults on the importance of renewable energy in Costa Rica.     Volunteer’s Responsibilities Include: Participate in the ‘Solar Panel’ Workshop Learn how Solar Panels are installed andmaintained Help assemble all the Solar Panel parts Help install Solar Panels Educate the community   Qualifications An ideal volunteer on this project has a passion for environmental conservation, renewable energy, and helping communities.  You will be spending time with local Costa Ricans – who may not speak English that well – but the coordinator and the teacher on site speak English. The costs for this project are: The fee for the Solar Power Project is $1200 for 2 weeks, including around 10 full days of course work and activities. Not included in our costs: National and International flights Travel insurance Visa costs Additional travel Any additional food or snacks besides the host family meals Other personal expenses       This is the GLV Handbook for the Solar Power Project – A Hands On Workshop.
