Learn Spanish Ripon

This course is taught over two semesters (A1.1 and A1.2) and is known as Beginner or Breakthrough level according to the CEFRL.

This course is taught over two semesters (A2.1 and A2.2) and is known as Elementary or Waystage level according to the CEFRL.

The course is open to students who have passed the A1 level course. Applicants who have a comparable level of Spanish through studies in other institutions or countries may also be admitted upon interview and assessment.

The aim of the course is to build up on the skills already acquired in the previous year and to add further skills which will enable students to deal with texts and situations which are linguistically more challenging than those experienced in lower levels. By the end of the course, students will understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance such as personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment, etc. They will be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. They will also be able to describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Assessment for this course will be based on assignments, progress tests and an oral test at the end of the course. Students who achieve the recommended level to go on to Spanish B1 will be able to apply to take the DELE A2 exam in May of the same year. Applying for this examination will be the responsibility of the student and will incur additional costs.

This course is taught over three semesters (B1.1, B1.2 and B1.3) and is known as Pre-Intermediate or Threshold level according to the CEFRL.

The goal of this course is to further develop the students’ skills in Spanish with the aid of other materials (texts, audio and video) as well as the textbook. There will be a focus on the study of Hispanic culture and history and students will be encouraged to improve their oral and written skills. By the end of this course, students will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. They will be able to produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; also describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
