In today’s news of the excellent, a recently-deceased 107-year-old man put his extraordinary longevity down to his habit of drinking four bottles of red wine every day.

Vineyard owner Antonio Docampo Garcia, from Ribadavia in north Spain, said that he would drink a couple of bottles of rouge at lunch and a further two at dinner.

His son, Manuel Docampo Lopez, told La Voz de Galicia that his father could drink ‘a litre and a half all at once.’

‘When we were both at home we could get through 200 litres of wine a month,’ he said.

‘He never drank water.’

It’s inspiring stuff.

Two things are worth bearing in mind here, of course. The first is that Docampo only ever drank the organic, chemical-free wine his company, Bodegas Docampo, produced itself.

Secondly (our lawyers have told us to say) drinking four bottles of red wine a day likely won’t extend your life to 107. In all probability, it would make you live a hell of a lot less.
