Learn Spanish Teach English Exchange

Anne Owen, Instructor Anne Owen came to the ELI in the summer of 2005, while still teaching ESL in a vocational-technical high school in her hometown, York, PA. She had previously taught ESL to adults at the Literacy Council, EFL during her Peace Corps service, and ESL tutoring in various locales. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Arizona, a Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in TESOL from George Mason University, and a Secondary English Teaching Certification from Millersville University. After a long and successful career in the Travel Business, ten years of managing incentive groups and international meeting planning, Anne spent two years in Lascano, Uruguay as Peace Corps volunteer where she most notably learned Spanish, taught English, wrote a newspaper column, spoke to Junior Achievement classes, facilitated meetings between Lascano and Montevideo and spoke on the radio to surrounding rural communities about micro creditsand loans. She has also been a volunteer for several organizations, including Disaster Services for the Red Cross, Hospice and Habitat for Humanity. At the ELI, Anne has taught many different classes in Levels III, IV, V and VI. Most recently, she teaches the EAPVI classes. She is also the coordinator for ELI Intramural sports teams and the Co-chair of the Activities and Events Committee. She is a member of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Amnesty International and the UNHRC. She loves to cook, read, travel to new places, watch movies, share stories and learn from her students.
