Spanish Language Journalism Recognizing the profound changes underway in the journalism profession, the Spanish-language journalism master’s program – the first of its kind taught entirely in Spanish – offers a curriculum that emphasizes convergence and multimedia. With three distinct specializations – Spanish-language journalism and multimedia, Spanish-English-language journalism and Spanish-language journalism in Latin American and Caribbean Studies – this master’s program is designed for aspiring and experienced journalists who want to work at the professional level in the Spanish-Language media in the U.S., Latin America, or Europe. The focus of the program is on the development of the writing, critical thinking, analytic, ethical and practical skills necessary for a professional career in journalism. Spanish-language Master’s Program in Multimedia Journalism offers thefollowing: Training in electronic media Digital video edition and multimedia production Internships in radio, television, print and digital journalism This specialization provides students with extensive training in electronic media, digital video editing and multimedia production, and hands-on experience through exclusive internships in radio, television, print and digital journalism. The Spanish-language journalism track is geared toward Spanish-speaking students educated in the United States who wish to expand their professional options in the Spanish-language media market. It is also designed for Latin American students and journalists who need to acquire writing, reporting, and digital production skills to work for Spanish-language print, broadcast or web-based media. This is a one-of-a-kind program offered entirely in Spanish, with an emphasis on journalism and multimedia, a concept incorporated in all the skills courses. The program, designed to start in the fall, may becompleted in one year and consists of 36 credits (12 courses of three credits each). Two are electives and can be taken outside of the SJMC. The courses are only offered once a year in the semester indicated below, except for the Final Professional Project, which is offered in the fall, spring and summer terms. Bilingual Journalism Program Besides the Spanish-language Master’s Program in Multimedia Journalism, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) offers a bilingual master’s program in Journalism with a track in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. This program is fundamental for journalists who want to cover Latin American issues. Four courses are offered in English through FIU’s Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) and eight courses are offered in Spanish by the SJMC. This specialized track is designed for graduate students who are new to journalism, and for those who want to further their knowledge in the field. Students have the opportunity to specialize inareas of political science that are fundamental for journalists who want to cover Latin American issues. This interdisciplinary program will enable students to delve into the political and historical Latin American context of the stories they will cover as reporters. The program will consist of 36 credits (12 courses of three credits each). Four courses will be offered in English through the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), and eight, in Spanish, by the SJMC. The professional project must be completed in Spanish, and it will be supervised and graded by faculty members of SJMC’s Spanish-Language Master’s Program in Journalism. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND FORMS You must have a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree. You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA during the last two years of study. Pass the TOEFL exam with a minimum score of 500 or score of 80 in the online exam –if your degree is from an institution outside the U.S. Pass the EXADEP (Graduate Entrance Exam) with a minimumscore of 525 points.
