Hello everyone. I realized I haven’t yet written a lesson about this! If I have then I can’t find it and I imagine my readers can’t find it either in that case.
Telling the weather is pretty much one of the first things you’re supposed to learn when learning a new language. It opens conversations too, when you can say something like ‘nice weather we’re having today, huh?’ don’t you think?
Let’s get to it. First, vocabulary:
- Soleado (so-leh-ah-doh) – Sunny
- Nublado (noo-blah-doh) – Cloudy
- Lluvioso (ju-vee-oh-soh) – Rainy
- Nevoso (neh-voh-soh) – Snowy
- Ventoso (ven-toh-soh) – Windy
- Caluroso (kah-loo-roh-soh) – Hot
- Frío (free-oh) – Cold
- Agradable (ah-grah-dah-bleh) – Agreeable
- Brumoso (broo-moh-soh) – Foggy
- Templado (tem-plah-doh) – Balmy, warm
- Tiempo (tee-em-poh) – Weather, time
- Clima (Clee-mah) – Climate
How do you say how the weather is? Here are some examples: (*These apply to any of the vocabulary words above. Except clima and tiempo, of course)
El día está caluroso – The day is hot
El día está nublado – The day is cloudy
Hoy está frío – Today is cold
Mañana estará ventoso – Tomorrow will be windy
Ayer estaba brumoso – Yesterday was foggy
How do you ask how the weather is?
¿Cómo está el tiempo por allá? – How is the weather over there?
¿Cómo está el clima? ¿Está frío? – How is the weather? (literally: climate) Is it cold?
¿Está nevoso? – Is it snowy?
* you can also ask: ¿Está nevando? – Is it snowing?
¿Estará caluroso? – Will it be (or could it be) hot?
More phrases:
Me pregunto si nevará – I wonder if it will snow
*nevará is the future tense of the verb nevar, which means to snow.
Seguirá lloviendo – It will keep/continue raining
*From verb llover which means to rain
