For example, if we see a sentence with the pronoun ÉL we would know we are talking about a man, whereas a sentence with ELLA would be talking about a woman. The picture below shows all Los pronombres personales en español and how they are classified into three categories called PERSONAS.

Personal pronouns in Spanish

"Personal pronouns" are classified into three grammatical persons, PEOPLE, DEPENDING ON Their singular or plural form. It Means That if we talk about prep FIRST PERSON SINGULAR (first person of the singular form) we would be Talking about the subject pronoun I, Whereas if We were talking acerca THIRD PERSON PLURAL (third person of the plural fom) we would be talking about THEY / THEM. These people are very useful When learning in any tense. We will see this in future lessons, but in what is generally Important is that you 'know the meaning of the pronouns and How They can be used to replace a noun in a sentence. Here is a chart with subject pronouns and Their Corresponding meaning in Inglés.

Person Singular Meaning Plural Meaning 1st Yo I Nosotros, nosotras We 2nd Tú/vos You Vosotros(as) – only used in Spain You 2nd Usted(formal) You Ustedes – used in Latin America You 3rd Él He They Ellos 3rd Ella She They Ellas
Language tip: “El pronombre personal VOS” is used in several Latin American countries but in a more informal context, between family members for example. The pronoun TÚ is more polite and acceptable in many countries, but it depends on the culture of that place. If you haven’t met someone before or want to sound respectful, you’d better use TÚ or USTED.

Using Spanish subject pronouns in sentences and questions.

Subject pronouns are very easy to use actually. We just need to find a pronoun that agrees in number () and gender () with the original noun and make sure that this pronoun corresponds to the form of the verb as well, for example, if we are talking about a guy named “Carlos” and we don’t want to repeat his name many times, we can use the pronoun “Él” instead as in the sentence “Carlos es buena persona. Él tiene dos hijos”. Sometimes personal pronouns could be omitted but keeping the right conjugation of the verb, which means that the sentence “Yo vivo en Miami” would mean the same as “Vivo en Miami”. We often keep the pronoun when we need to emphasize who performs the action and omit it when we are in a casual conversation or just want to sound more natural. Here are some examples:

Examples of sentences using subject/personal pronouns Yo vivo con mi mamá I live with my mother ¿ Tú tienes un bolígrafo? Do you have a pen? ¿ Vos viste esa película? Did you see that movie? Él, ella, usted – Ken está en preescolar. Él es buen estudiante He, She, You – Ken is attending preschool. He is a good student Nosotros vamos a casarnos pronto. We are getting married soon ¿ Vosotros podéis ayudarme? Can you help me? ¿ Ustedes quieren trabajar conmigo? Do you want to work with me? Ann y Karl son listos. Ellos siempre están trabajando mucho. Ann and Karl are smart. They are always working hard.

Question 1 María vive en Estados Unidos. ____ es cantante. A Ella B Él C Nosotros Question 1 Explanation:  Well, there are two clues for this sentence. The first one is that we are talking about “María” and the pronoun that agrees withthis name is “Ella”. Second, looking at the form of verb to be (ES) in the second sentence, we can infer that “Él” and “Ella” are the closest answers. Question 2 Los niños siempre juegan en el patio. ______ la pasan bien juntos. A Nosotros B Yo C Ellos Question 2 Explanation:  In this case we are talking about “los niños” (the kids). It gives us the clue that we must use “Ellos” in the next sentence. Remember that it is also possible to omit the subject pronoun and just say something like “La pasan bien juntos” Question 3 Mi nombre es Alejandro. ____ tengo 5 años de trabajar aquí. A Yo B Ella C Tú Question 3 Explanation:  Like in all sentences, the form of the verb tells us what subject pronoun to use. “Tengo” comes from the verb “tener” (to have) and it is in the first person of the singular so we have to use the pronoun “Yo”. Question 4 Ana y yo somos empresarias. _____ somos buenas amigas. A Ellas B Nosotras C Ustedes Question 4 Explanation:  Here we have to use “nosotras” becausewe are talking about two women. “Nosotros”, “Vosotros” and “Ellos” are affected by gender rules, which means that if we are talking about a group of women, we would have to use these pronouns in a feminine form, for example: “Nosotras”, “Ellas” and so on. In this case “ellas” and “ustedes” do not fit in the sentence because they do not agree with the form of the verb in the sentence. Question 5 ¡Mucho gusto! _______ eres el novio de Ana ¿verdad? A ellos B usted C tú Question 5 Explanation:  In this case we need “tú” because is the only pronoun that matches this form of the verb “to be” (SER), “eres”. Question 6 Disculpen señoritas, ¿_______ trabajan aquí? A Ustedes B Yo C Nosotros Question 6 Explanation:  When we need to ask something in Spanish to more than one people, we use the subject pronoun “ustedes”. Remember that “vosotros” is only used in Spain so it is not very common to hear that in Latin America. Question 7 Ayer vi a Carlos en la tienda. ______ te mandó saludos. A Él B EllaC Nosotras Question 7 Explanation:  Since we are talking about Carlos, we need pronoun “Él” to refer to him in the second sentence. Once you are finished, click the button below.
